Young Families Support Committee
The aim of the committee is to identify and campaign on issues affecting the lives of children and young people with learning disabilities and their parents, carers, brothers and sisters. Together we can make a difference.
Some of the work the Committee does
- Giving evidence to Scottish Ministers about their children’s education.
- Producing information leaflets and booklets and CD roms.
- Helping bring young people with learning disabilities together from across Scotland to campaign on matters that affect their lives.
- Improving and developing services in their local communities.
History of the Young Families Support Committee
The Young Families Support Committee was formed in 1993 at a time when the organisation's governing body, Scottish Council, realised that there were very few members who were parents and carers of children and young people with learning disabilities. The original members of this committee were 8 parents, 3 volunteers involved in supporting families of children with learning disabilities and 1 professional from a national organisation.
Initially the committee exchanged ideas and discussed shared problems about their lives as parents and carers of children and young people with learning disabilities. In order that some of these ideas and problems were addressed and to support the committee's growing ambitions, an application was made to Children in Need for a Children's Officer. In 1998 a Children’s Officer was appointed to identify other families across Scotland and network them together to help campaign on matters that affect the lives of families.
The Young Families Support Committee is managed by Linda Whitmore.
