ENABLE Scotland launches a manifesto for 2012

Up and down Scotland, thousands of people decked out in suits and colourful rosettes are desperate for your vote.  As prospective Councillors these people could play a hugely important role in the lives of people who have learning disabilities and their parents and carers.

On 3 May 2012, Scotland will once again go to the polls to elect some of these people as its representatives to hold each of the 32 local authorities to account.  ENABLE Scotland wants to make sure that every new Councillor knows what they can do for people who have learning disabilities and their parents and carers.

That's why we have produced a new manifesto that you can send to candidates and ask them to support when they knock on your door.  The manifesto contains a number of key pledges – such as offering people who have learning disabilities more choice and control over their support, specialist welfare rights guidance and proper training for teachers and other staff in school on learning disability and autism awareness.

Mike Holmes, Executive Director, ENABLE Scotland said: “People who have learning disabilities should be valued as full and active members of their community and local authorities play a key role in making this happen.”

“ENABLE Scotland is acutely aware of the difficult economic times and pressures on local authority budgets.  Our manifesto reflects this and is not calling for anything that would add significant costs – indeed some of our asks could be more cost-effective and result in people leading better lives.”
