Is it time to take charge?

The financial climate is hitting many people who have learning disabilities from across Scotland in the pocket – according to a new report by Audit Scotland.

“Commissioning Social Care” reports that seven of Scotland’s thirty-two local authorities now charge for social care services which had previously been free.

Many people who have learning disabilities are already poor and lots of people have told us that they do not feel they can afford the charges they are being asked to pay.  Local authorities can charge for lots of things that help people who have learning disabilities to live more independently.  This includes home care services, day services and blue badges.

ENABLE Scotland is concerned that many people who have learning disabilities will be forced to withdraw from services or pushed further into poverty by these measures.  We believe it is time to ‘take charge’ of this situation.  Our manifesto for the upcoming local elections has called for greater consistency over care charges and more accessible information available to people who have learning disabilities about charging.
