London 2012 Torchbearer Nominations

It is only one year to go until the London 2012 Olympics. The search is on for torchbearers who will carry the Olympic flame across the UK next summer before the Games start. ENABLE Scotland has been asked to help find people to carry the torch across Scotland. Each person will carry the flame for 300 metres.
ENABLE Scotland would like to suggest 50 people across Scotland who could carry the torch and take part. You can suggest more than one name but only one suggestion per person will be put into the ballot to decide who gets to carry the torch. So we would like as many people as possible to nominate someone you know whose personal story will inspire others or a person who deserves their moment to shine!
You can nominate someone who has been a real friend, someone who tries their best or someone who makes a difference in their community.
To nominate someone you need to contact the London Olympics direct by 29th June 2011. It is best to do this through the London Olympic website at this web address:
You can also call the Olympics Contact Centre on 0800 111 6448.
What you need to know before you nominate a person
To enter someone you have to:
  • write up to 150 words on why the person you want to nominate should carry the Olympic flame.
  • make sure the person wants to carry the torch and agrees with what you have written about them.
You must read all the terms and conditions before you nominate someone.
You must be aged 12 or over to nominate a person and the person nominated must be aged 12 or over.
The person you nominate will be contacted by email or phone in August 2011.
You must enter your contact information and the contact information for the person you are nominating.
There is more information about the rules on the London Olympics website -
Here is an example of what someone might write about a person they are nominating:
"Andrew, who has a learning disability, has spent the last two years campaigning to make elections more accessible to people who are being excluded from voting due to disability, age and language. Andrew has given up a huge amount of his time to work on a European project that is aiming to show politicians how elections can be made more accessible. He has spoken about the issue at many events often to large audiences.
"Andrew is also a member of ENABLE Scotland’s local self advocacy group ACE and is an active member of ENABLE Scotland’s local Annan branch. Andrew also serves on the charity’s Scottish Council.
"Andrew is a valued member of The Scottish Government’s The Same As You? Implementation Group and in 2007 he received an MBE for his contribution to this project."
We would like to know who is being nominated through ENABLE Scotland.  So after you have nominated someone on the London Olympic website please send us the information as well.
Please email Natalie Boyle at to tell us who you have nominated.

We look forward to hearing about all your nominations!
