New research shows massive College cuts for people who have learning disabilities

College courses offer people who have learning disabilities the opportunity to gain valuable qualifications, new skills and to engage with their local community and spend time with their peers.

This summer, ENABLE Scotland was contacted by a number of people who raised concerns about cuts to college courses with little notice.  New research, conducted with our partners at the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability (SCLD), has highlighted massive cuts of around 34% to part time courses for people who have learning disabilities.

We are deeply concerned about the impact of these cuts – not just for people who have learning disabilities but also for their parents and carers.

Mike Holmes, ENABLE Scotland’s Executive Director (Campaigns) said: “A high number of people who have a learning disability are being squeezed out of the further education system. Cutting college places will lead to increased demand for local authority day services and increased pressure on family carers to support their relatives during the day.”

Have you, or somebody you know, been affected by cuts to college courses?  What are you doing instead?  Let us know by contacting Andrew Strong by telephone on 0141 225 1637 or by email at: andrew.strong@enable.org.uk.
