On the 4th of December which was Friday the Christmas Party was held at the Couper Institute Hall in Clarkston Road. There was 135 people there. I had a great time talking to people and had fun dancing. The disco started at 7.30pm and had a break about 9.30pm for food and raffle. I did not win anything! Well done to the people who did.

After the raffle there was more dancing all the way through to midnight. I think everyone enjoyed themselves. I would like to thank Bex, Hugh and Laura for organising the party. The DJ is called Sunny Govan Radio. The tables were decorated a small Christmas tree and tinsel and party poppers and balloons and streamers and hooters and tooters.

The Soloist

This is a story of a down and out musician who dreams of playing his music with an orchestra. He finds a place to sleep and when he wakes up he goes out on the street to play his music, where he finds a friend in Steve Lopez, a newspaper reporter who helps him get his chance to go for his dream. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and I give it ten out of ten.

Julie and Julia

This is a film about two ladies. One is a telephone receptionist who dreams of being a writer, and the other is a famous cook (America’s answer to Fanny Craddock). Julie wants to be a cook, but her skill is writing. She decides to write a book about cooking with Julia’s recipes. This film was very funny and I give it eight out of ten.

Coldplay take on Hampden Park

Karen Flynn & Gary Sorbie

Jay Z set the crowd into motion with a staggering one-hour set where he worked through hip hop classics such as Dirt Off Your Shoulder, 99 Problems and Big Pimpin’. The rapper entertained the crowd with the backing of a nine-man band who provided strong musical backing to the ex-Brooklyn star. Approaching 40 years-old, Jay-Z is still as exciting as ever and certainly got the crowd going.

Finishing with probably his most recognisable track, Encore (Linkin Park remix), Jay Z rallied the crowd for the second half of an already vastly entertaining show.

Chris Martin came on stage to massive cheers from the audience. The British super group came on performing their smash hit Violet Hill and Martin thanked the Scots crowd for “letting them come to Glasgow.” They followed this with Clocks and the crowd pleasing favorite In My Place.

Gary Sorbie attended the Coldplay gig at Hampden with his friend Graham and some of his friends from Borders in Glasgow. As this was Gary’s first gig he said he enjoyed it very much and it gave him a really good feeling, and he has said he would definitely do this again. Gary also said the atmosphere in stadium was very exciting and that he enjoyed the light show immensely.

Gary particularly enjoyed when Chris Martin asked the crowd to sing a chorus of Yellow to which Simon Cowell appeared on the big screen stating “that was the worst audition ever” this was then followed by a second chorus this time getting the thumbs up from Simon which delighted the Glasgow crowd.

The light show and set-up of the event was fantastic treating the crowd to an excellent laser show. Just as the band strummed into the classic Yellow, countless, massive yellow balloons were released upon the crowd. The band were cheered back on stage to perform their encore Trouble followed by a tribute to Michael Jackson where they performed the smash hit Billie Jean and finally leaving the stage to Viva La Vida with explosions of thousands of Paper butterflies.

Bex’s 150ft Titan Terror

Lesley Learmonth

Kinning Park Office manager Bex Downie did an abseil and raised money for ENABLE. She raised £445 with £100 for the Glasmag. The Titan Crane is 150ft high and Bex is terrified of heights!

Year One

This is a story about cavemen getting a date from the opposite sex. They go hunting to get food for their families. I thought it was very funny when Jack Black tries to hunt down a bull and ask his girlfriend on a date.

Coco Before Chanel

This is about a young french orphan girl who wants to be a perfume maker so she goes to the perfume shop for a job. She likes selling perfume to customers and to go on stage and sing songs with her sister. One day she goes downtown to shop for her different clothes and goes out to a restaurant. She falls in love with a handsome Englishman. I thoroughly enjoyed this film - ten out of ten!

Thank You For the Days

Christine Higgins

On Monday the 6th July 2009 we went to the Hilton Grosvenor to celebrate the 10th Anniversary for Glasgow Day Service. There were lots of photographs and memories from over the years round the hall and a table to showcase our arts and crafts.

The day started with people having tea and coffee and chatting about the day ahead.  At this point I was also practising my speech that I had prepared.  Donna Thompson and Laura Marshall opened the celebrations and talked about everyone’s achievements over the last ten years and also how we can move forward in the future. Norman Dunning, Chief Executive, also spoke to everyone and wished us well.

I gave my speech about my time with the service and I felt really proud.  I couldn’t believe how much has happened over the last ten years.  Laura Cunningham, Robert Gray and Ann Edminson also gave speeches.  Everyone enjoyed hearing our stories and achievements.  We had lunch and then it was time to party! At the

end of the day we all got a group photograph and this will be a great reminder of a fantastic day.

Here’s to the next ten years!

Corset Carnival

The Glasmag first fundraising night raised over £300 towards getting the blog established. The audience enjoyed performances from Wooboodoo (pictured), Glasgow Capoeira and burlesque performers Leyla Rose, Vendetta Vain and Cat Aclysmic. Thanks to everyone who came along! The Grand Ole Opry helped to make the night a fantastic one and donated £100 to Glasmag - thanks goes to them, The Cave and Bad Kitty Corsets who made our burlesque/capoeira performance possible!

Dr Who Exhibition

Gary Sorbie, June 2009

Aliens from all over the universe, daleks surrounding you and the Tardis in the background. You could step into Dr Who for a day by visiting the Kelvingrove Musuem this month. This exhibition was very good - I managed to get a ticket even though it had sold out for weeks, and it was worth it.

It seemed there had been lots of hard work to create the exhibition. You could get into one of the life-size daleks, which sounded very realistic. A large TV screen showed clips from all the Dr Who series, along with models of aliens and creatures, including the robot dog. I thought it was aimed at the older fans of Dr Who, from Tom Baker’s day, but as a fan of the later series it was still wonderful. You can see Dr Who til January, if you can get a ticket! 9/10
