Campaign For Community Access

Laura Doidge

Several residents of Castlemilk are facing a dead end trying to use their local swimming pool, as it does not have the correct equipment they need (a changing table). Due to some residents physical disabilities it is not simply a case of diving into the pool.

So far Glasgow City Council have been unable to support us on this issue.

We need you to get involved!  Come to the Community Meeting and help think of fundraising ideas and hear what our Councillor has to say.

Maybe you are facing this problem too? Come along and we can tackle it together.

Date: 15th July 2010

Time: 7pm

Venue: Castlemilk Community Centre

YAG Fundraising Walk

Karen Maley

EnableLink youth activity club are walking from Auchinstarry to Bishopbriggs along the canal to raise money for activites during the holidays. This is a very inspiring group of young people that see past the person’s disability and enjoy being friends and having fun. The YAG are a mix of young people with and without learning difficulties that come together to organise social activities. The group see each other as friends above and before anything else.

Activites we’re hoping to include this summer are gigs, go-karting, outward bound days and paintballing.

Please check Glasmag in future for photographic evidence of the walk and updates on various events throughout the summer, including drama and dance classes that you could get involved in!

To show your support for this continuing good work please sponsor the guys by visiting : http://www.justgiving.com/Karen-Maley

Another day at the office for the Enable, Glasgow team…..

Hugh Savage

Despite some of our most sterling performers being absent, the Enable, Glasgow five a-side team once again saw off the lacklustre challenge of the National office team who were missing their talismanic keeper, one  Allan ‘where did it go?’ Davidson but given his recent form could only count that as a plus, surely?

We were so far in front that George ‘Clutcher ‘ Clark was encouraged to venture out from the goal area and join in on open play late in the game. The sight of George in full flight was something to behold, akin, some said to the Tasmanian Devil crossed with Rudolf Nureyev and the charge from Braveheart! Awe-inspiring! The magic was evidently still there and only bad luck deprived George of a glory goal.

This was the last straw for the national team who finally folded like a pair of twos against a royal flush!

Despite our continuing dominance – two weeks in a row now – we are still looking for new recruits from within Enable, Glasgow, so if you fancy a game contact anyone at the office – its still every Tuesday night 5.30-6.30pm at the Townhead Pitz.  Come on, dust off your boots and drink from the glory cup!

If a more sedate pace would suit, with less intensity, as some of the people we support have indicated, we are looking to organise a gentleman’s game or two (or more!)  where the folk we support will find a more tolerant and more encouraging and welcoming football environment. If you support someone who would like a game and they would like to attend we will gather names and get this organised. Fitness and talent are irrelevant – see the national team above! – so everyone is welcome. We can play indoors or outdoors once we get enough people and the cost would roughly be £5/6 a head. Get in touch with the office or your team leader and, once again, shake those cobwebs off your boots!

‘Team DK’ Take on Race for Life

Sarah Mathieson

'Team DK'

Enable Scotland has provided 24/7 support for four people living in Castlemilk for the last seven years, these people have lived side by side in Barlia Grove along with their support teams, staff and all the people became really close in the process. Sadly in March one of the people who recieved support David, passed away after fighting cancer for over a year. Now the people who shared his life, his friends and team, want to raise money in their friends name for Cancer Research. They did this by tackling the ‘Race for Life’ event at Glasgow Green on June 6th, with all sponsorship raised going straight to fighting cancer. The team comprised seven staff members past and present and one of Davids friends who lives in Barlia grove and is supported by Enable.

My London Trip

Gary Sorbie

Trooping the Colour

I had a trip to The Big Smoke in June visiting my Brother and Sister-in-Law. Although I was stopping in Watford we were invited to a big birthday party in a London bistro and I saw all the sights.

On the Saturday I saw the Foot Guards Trooping the Colour at Whitehall which was very interesting. At the closing ceremony the Red Arrows did a big flyby and this was good, I’ve seen them before but not so close up! Not only did I see this but I went round the usual sights of Big Ben and the London Eye (but not on it!). The weather up here is much better than what I found in London!!

The World Cup started when I was down south and it was good to see England struggling when I was on their turf!

On the whole I like London, it was nice to visit and had some great radio stations but I wouldn’t want to stay there!

Music Lovers Read On

Hello

I really love my music, unfortunately there appears to be nothing within the Glasgow area designed specifically for people like myself who have learning difficulties to create and/or listen to music. I was therefore wondering if anyone reading this uses or knows of such a group, or alternately would be interested in setting up a similar group?

If you can help please contact me care of Margaret Winters on margaret.winters@enable.org.uk

Young Scotland’s Got Talent

Nicola Young

Back to the day job – seen it, done it, got the T-Shirt (and certificate)

On Wednesday 9th June I went to Hampden Park for a conference and workshops. One of the workshops was a fashion show being run by Wendy Bayne and she asked me to be a model on the day. As my job with Enable is a receptionist I had to dress like one for the show. We had a dress rehearsal beforehand on 8th June, I was so nervous but knew that on the day I’d be fine.

On the day itself I had to be at Hampden for 8:30am and our hairdressers and make up artists arrived at 9:00 to get all us models ready. I was on at 10:30, I walked down the catwalk and back again then was interviewed by a comedian, Susan. After all the models had taken their turn on the catwalk we all went back on as a group, walked down the middle of the catwalk and off the end to chat and shake hands with the people that were watching. I then had my photograph taken on my own and with the rest of the group by the professional cameraman that was there.

I did the fashion show twice, once at 10:30am and again at 1:00pm. The first time I did it was quiet with about three rows of chairs on each side of the catwalk. Before I went on stage I was nervous but once I’d started I was totally fine. The second show was better with more people and I felt happier and confident that I could do it again.

‘Clutcher’ Clark Saves the Day!

Hugh Savage

1st June

The Enable Glasgow 5 a-side team triumphed this evening against their old rivals from National Office in a thrilling encounter up at the Townhead Pitz.

The game was dramatically transformed once George Clark, making his debut in goals for Glasgow, wiped the sleep of five years semi-retirement from his eyes and was able once again to focus on the matter in hand.

George’s experience began to be displayed very quickly. Once he had nipped his fag and placed it carefully behind his ear, he was ready to begin. By then, unfortunately, we were three down. Undaunted, however, George came into his own as the game began in earnest.

Alasdair Illingworth  a.k.a. the white Pele and Hugh Savage a.k.a. the white Bele as well as two guest players, Ally and Dave,  comprised on the evening the Glasgow team. But the evening was George’s!

In a display which threw up memories of other goalkeeping greats like Haffey, (look it up), Rough (Alan) and Simpson (Homer), George began slowly to expand to fill the goal mouth, blocking shots and bad passbacks like the Indian God Shiva, (the one with four arms) and generally inspiring those in front of him to redress the deficit, goal after wonderful goal until, to our collective disbelief, we were ahead!

When the final whistle blew the crowd rushed the field and lifted George shoulder high -   all the way to the waiting ambulance! From his hospital bed, George vowed, nevertheless, to return and don the gloves he forgot to bring this time!

(The less said about the last two weeks the better – Ed)

If you too would like to revisit old glories or build new ones, the game takes place usually up at the Townhead Pitz every Tuesday from 5:30 until 6:30. Just call or come into the office and take the fitness test – usually rolling a fag  one-handed or buying a round, whichever is easier – and you too can be part of something great!
