Give Scotland’s Disabled Children Our Missing Millions

February 8th, 2010

£34 million pledged in 2008 to support  Scottish children with disabilities  may have been spent on something else.

The treasury allocated £34 million to local authorities to spend on disabled children, but most councils can’t tell us how they spent it. We have no way of knowing if a single penny went to disabled children.

We’re working with our colleagues at For Scotland’s Disabled Children to make sure the remaining £11.3 million is spent as it should be: transforming disabled children’s lives.

Disabled children need this money now more than ever. Make sure it’s spent properly in your area.

There are lots of good resources on the FSDC website where you can learn more and take action now.

Self-directed support: A National Strategy for Scotland

February 8th, 2010

A new consultation from the Scottish Government

http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2010/02/05133942/0

The national strategy for self-directed support in Scotland has been developed to help take forward the personalisation of health and social care services in Scotland.

The increasing numbers of people accessing social care and the range of individual needs mean that services and supports will have to continue to become much more flexible and responsive in the future. This strategy responds to increasing interest in reshaping care and support in Scotland. It aims to set out and drive a cultural shift around the delivery of care and support that views people as equal citizens with rights and responsibilities. It recognises that for consumers and providers alike, tighter financial pressures, and demographic changes mean that improved outcomes cannot be delivered with more of the same.

Have your say on a manifesto for disabled people

We’re looking for input from disabled people, carers, professionals or just anyone who has something to say about disability. What commitments do we want from politicians? Is it about accessibility, benefits or guaranteeing that funding won’t be cut?

The key themes that have come up so far are:

  • poverty and benefits
  • employment
  • achieving equality
  • citizenship
  • carers

Is there something we’re missing? Let us know the issues that are important to you. We’ll post all of your suggestions here and take them to DAS to be considered for the manifesto.

Leave a comment below, or if you’d prefer to talk to someone, you can call Andrew on 0141 225 1679.
