Accessible Council

Will our Council #BeTheChange?

All Council services should be accessible for people who have learning disabilities. All too often people who have learning disabilities tell us that they feel disconnected from where power lies.
Often they don’t understand decisions which are taken and feel that things are being done ‘to them ‘not ‘with them’.
Why we need you to #BeTheChange:

Members tell us that:
  • Communications from the Council relating to things like Council Tax or Housing Benefit are sent in letter form and written in language that is complicated and confusing.
  • Easy read is not a readily available format for Council documents in the same way other languages or BSL/Braille is.
  • People who have learning disabilities are often misunderstood when trying to access customer services at the Council and staff don’t always know how to support someone who has a learning disability with their issue, either in person or on the phone.
  • Sometimes basic things like understanding when recycling is uplifted or how to report a pothole or broken light can be difficult for someone who has a learning disabilities due to an inaccessible system and lack of support.
How can you #BeTheChange?

11. Commit to becoming an Easy-Read Council in 2017-2021.
12. Ensure that everyone in the Council is trained to ensure they understand the barriers that exist for people who have learning disabilities.
