Further Education

Many colleges across Scotland are reducing the number of college courses they provide for students who have a learning disability.  They are also reducing the number of college hours available to students.

ENABLE Scotland is worried that these cuts will mean that fewer people who have learning disabilities will get to benefit from attending college.  This may mean they are less likely to find meaningful employment or other day activities.  It could also mean that they become more reliant on family carers, providers or social work departments.

We have been working closely with the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability to find out how these cuts have been affecting people who have learning disabilities.  In September 2011, SCLD published “If I Don’t Get A Place Next Year, I Don’t Know What I’ll Do” which  found:

•    12 colleges said their funding for these courses had reduced
•    The majority of students who had lost their college place had not been offered any alternative
•    34% of part time places for people who have learning disabilities had been cut.

fected by cuts to college courses? What are you doing instead?  Contact Andrew Strong to tell us about your experiences.
