Older families and learning disabilities
Imagine hoping that your child will die the day before you do.
Thousands of ageing parents of people who have learning disabilities care full time. Many are terrified about what will happen to their sons and daughters when they are no longer around.
ENABLE Scotland has been campaigning since 2004 to
ensure that lifelong carers are given some recognition and priority in
Government policies to allow them some peace of mind.
They are running out of time. These carers want better support, help to plan for the future and peace of mind.
On 14 July 2011, ENABLE Scotland, along with Alzheimer Scotland, MECOPP, South Lanarkshire Council and Shared Care Scotland, organised an event at which local authority representatives, carers and professionals met to discuss how best to give carers peace of mind should an emergency arise.
Findings of the day included a requirement for a more flexible and accessible approach to support in an emergency, better identification of carers and the need to ensure that emergency planning is included as part of the Carers Assessment.
