Workshops
Tricky Moments (10.15-11.15am, 11.15-12.15pm and 1-2pm)
If you want to learn some practical tips and strategies for coping with your child’s “Tricky Moments” (challenging behaviour such as sleep problems, fussy eating, aggression etc) and share what works for you with other parents, then this is the session for you.
We will also be launching our brand new resource – a full colour booklet packed full of tried and tested suggestions from parents and teachers for coping successfully with your child’s “tricky moments”.
Autism (11.15-12.15am and 1-2pm)
Living with Autism may be likened to landing on an alien planet without an orientation manual or guidebook informing you 'how to do it’. The session will start with a brief 'Planet exercise' - discovering how the world may be experienced by those with Autism.
'Parents are keen to see their children make progress and become young people and adults who enjoy being who they are and experience a 'quality life'; accepted, valued and contributing within their local community, as an equal and active citizen.
The following topics will be explored:
Relationships (10.15-11.15am and 1-2pm)
The majority of young people with a learning disability will go through puberty and express the same wants, needs and desires as other young people. Sexual Health and Relatonships Education is particularly important in teaching that much of this behaviour is healthy and natural and nothing to be embarrassed about, but it must be done in a private place.
Our workshop on Relationships looks at what parents, carers and professionals can do to support young people to manage sexualised behaviour and to make safe choices about relationships. If you would like to learn more about strategies, resources and people who can help, please come along.
Wills & Trusts (10.15-11.15am)
One thing that people can do to offer someone with a learning disability some form of financial protection whilst giving themselves reassurance and peace of mind, is to write a Will and set up a Discretionary Trust.
ENABLE Trustee Service Limited manages money that has been put into trusts specifically for people who have learning disabilities.
Our information session will cover the following topics:
- The importance of writing a Will
- Providing for disabled beneficiaries
- Reasons for setting up a Discretionary Trust Fund
- Finding a suitable Solicitor
- How ENABLE Trustee Service can help
Making Decisions for People (Guardianship etc) (11.15am-12.15am)
The Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 provides ways to help safeguard the welfare and finances of people who lack capacity. It protects adults (people aged 16 or over) who lack capacity to take some or all decisions for themselves because of a mental disorder or an inability to communicate.
Our information session will cover the following topics:
- How the law can help a relative, friend or relative made decisions on someone’s behalf
- The types of powers available under the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000
