Additional support needs
Some children have significant learning difficulties that may need special measures and continual review. Special measures can include an adapted curriculum, communication equipment, therapy services or extra support in the classroom.
Teachers and education staff continually assess children to ensure that they are achieving what is expected at any stage. If your child is not progressing as well as the other children in the class, the teacher will first look at what can be done within the classroom.
The teacher can adapt what is being taught and how it is being taught, or remove distractions and create a more appropriate learning experience for your child. If appropriate, the school will ask for the assessment and advice of the educational psychologist or other specialists such as the speech and language therapist.
Under the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004, the local education authority must make “adequate and efficient” provision for young people who need extra help at school for any reason. The children affected are said to have additional support needs. Your local education authority must take your child’s additional support needs into account when providing education for him or her in the local authority’s own schools - or elsewhere if the education authority places a child outwith its area.
