ENABLE Scotland Research Launch

Exploring Concerns around a Child’s Diagnosis of a Learning Disability (including ASD): Experiences of Parents, Young People and Professionals in Scotland

We are delighted to invite you to attend the launch of ENABLE Scotland’s research findings on the above. The research was conducted through an online survey, interviews and group discussions. The research findings reflect the views of parents or primary carers of children who have learning disabilities; professionals identified by the parents as making a positive change in their journey around the period of diagnosis; and the young people who have a learning disability.

"But if your child is undiagnosed for years, or diagnosed with something like global developmental delay (GDD), which is the generic catchall, we haven’t got a clue, there’s nowhere to go with that." (Adoptive parent of child diagnosed with GDD)

"We were very lucky we had everyone on board from the start i.e. nursery, health visitors, speech and language team, doctor. Yes it took 3 years but they were all doing tests and watching the child all the time before I went to (X) hospital’s autism language unit to get a diagnosis for [the child]." (Parent of child diagnosed with Asperger syndrome)

"They [professionals] didn’t like to hear what I had to say…they were very much that they were the professionals and they knew what they were doing."  (Parent of child diagnosed with ASD)
