Lesley Learmonth

Fun run is serious business for Lesley
For Lesley Learmonth, and her support worker Chelsea Shiels, doing a 5k fun run last September had its serious side.
Lesley and Chelsea had started exercising at the gym to keep fit, and found it so much fun they thought they should do something more than step on a treadmill.
So they decided to do something to raise money and, being so closely involved with ENABLE Scotland, Lesley suggested raising money for something close to her heart – ENABLE Scotland’s ACE network.
ACE – the Advisory Committee of ENABLE – is a network of groups of people across Scotland who have learning disabilities, and Lesley was active in the national group, so knew how important their work was.
Chelsea agreed and they sound found the Glasgow Big Fun Run 2015 online, and applied straight away.
Lesley said: “Chelsea agreed we should put our new-found fitness to good use and we signed up for the Fun Run to do 5k around Bellahouston Park.
“ACE was the obvious choice for our fundraising as it is important, not just to me, but to everyone it represents, as it raises issue on behalf of people across Scotland who have learning disabilities.
“It’s important ACE continues this good work, but its budget is very tight and every penny we could raise for it would be a massive help.
“I’m extremely grateful to everyone who sponsored Chelsea and me. We raised almost £1,500 for ACE.”
And that marvellous achievement has whetted Lesley and Chelsea’s appetite, as they’re planning their next fundraiser.
“We’re thinking about cycling perhaps. Either that or something a little less strenuous such as a cake stall.”
Before then, Chelsea’s mum and dad are taking part in this year’s Kiltwalk, and Lesley and Chelsea are going to be their cheerleaders.
And with mum and dad raising money for ENABLE Scotland, it sounds like ACE could be onto another winner.
