"I went to mainstream school with a special unit. I had to travel for school because there are no schools like this available in my area. I was bullied by both children in the mainstream school and children in the unit.

"I was afraid to go out to the playground at lunchtime. Instead I would often sit in the library and read books. This made me happy.
My English teacher was probably one of the best teachers I ever had. He gave me a lot of time and effort and we both shared a common interest in Star Trek – we would swap magazines. I met him recently and he had said to me ‘you know it is never too late to sit Higher English, you can do this at college. Stuart, you know you have done very well for yourself I am pleased.'

"I won a Citizenship Award in school for helping pupils and teachers – never in a million years did I think I would have won an award. One of the teachers in college was excellent and completely understood autism. That made a difference for me. He had two sons with autism."
