Positive about disability

ENABLE Scotland particularly welcomes applications from people with a disability. We are part of Jobcentre Plus’ ‘Positive About Disability’ programme and, among other things, do the following to encourage people with a disability to work for us:

  • Offer our application forms in a number of different formats
  • Send our vacancies to local Disability Employment Advisers
  • Guarantee an interview if the applicant has the essential skills and experience.
  • Ask applicants if they need any help to attend an interview
  • Invite, where possible, to visit the workplace before the interview
  • Develop disability awareness among our staff
  • Review development each year through our appraisal process.

A few of our disabled staff on what they think it is like to work for ENABLE Scotland.

Mary Daniel

“I work for ENABLE Scotland as an Employment Development Worker. Previously, I worked in Jobcentreplus as an Admin Officer. I have mild cerebral palsy which affects my mobility and balance.

At present, I am responsible for New Deal Lanarkshire and New Deal in Paisley and Inverclyde. I am just starting a new project called Get Ready For Work in Dunbartonshire – ENABLE Scotland has just won the contract for this so I am really excited about this new challenge. Across the board, I have 11 clients in various placements and 4 waiting to go on placement. For the new project, I am visiting careers offices in Dunbartonshire.

I assisted 12 clients to gain employment last year and I find that my job is very fulfilling most of the time. I enjoy seeing clients progress and achieve their goals, enhancing their quality of life. I also advise on welfare benefits applications and appeals, if necessary, and have had good success.

When I first started with ENABLE Scotland, I assisted other Employment Development Workers with their clients. I am grateful to ENABLE Scotland as a company for giving me the opportunity to progress and build on my skills.”

Mark Peacock

Mark initially worked as an Administration Assistant at ENABLE Scotland’s Paisley office. When his contract came to an end, he accepted an offer to works as a Human Resources Assistant at ENABLE Scotland’s National Office. Mark has cerebral palsy.

“To have been offered the job with ENABLE Scotland in the first instance was terrific, given that, until then, I had only managed to obtain short term placements. To be given more hours was even better. It demonstrated to me that, finally, my skills, achievements and commitment were being recognised.

The financial security of working and knowing that I benefit from Working Tax Credit has been so tremendous that I now have my own car.

Working at ENABLE Scotland has also meant that I have done myself and my family proud!”

John Paul Moffat

John Paul works as a Participation Officer within ENABLE Scotland’s Practice and Participation team and has a learning disability.

“I am a member of staff at ENABLE Scotland’s National Office and I have worked here for nearly four years. I started my job straight after school on a probationary period and it worked well. Since then, I have enjoyed every minute of the job because everybody gets on well with one another and is helpful. Also, there are good nights out and great events throughout the year.”
