Hustings Event 2011

On Monday 28 February, ENABLE Scotland kicked off campaigning for the 2011 Scottish Parliament elections with a learning disability related hustings to launch our new manifesto. People who have learning disabilities, parents and carers asked questions ranging from education, self-directed support, transport and support for older family carers.

We were joined on the day by Bill Kidd MSP (Scottish National Party), Jackie Baillie MSP (Labour), Katy Gordon (Liberal Democrats), Andrew Morrison (Conservatives) and Cllr Martha Wardrop (Greens). The politicians agreed that more should be done to ensure people who have learning disabilities in Scotland have better lives. In particular, they agreed with the importance of personalisation and said that if they were elected they would encourage more choice and control for people who have learning disabilities, parents and carers over the support that they receive.

From L-R: Andrew Morrison (Conservatives), Holly Millar (Dates 'n' Mates Director), Peter Scott (Chief Executive, ENABLE Scotland), Katy Gordon (Liberal Democrats), Jackie Baillie MSP (Labour) and Cllr Martha Wardrop (Green Party). Bill Kidd MSP of the SNP was also present on the day.

ENABLE Scotland would like to thank the five political representatives who attended and also to our guest speakers and audience for providing some thorough thought-provoking questions.

Rachel Burns and Lauren Bradley question the panel of politicians.
