Stepping Up Live
As we enter the end of the first week with schools across Scotland closed as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, I’m acutely aware that parents and young people will be concerned about what this means for the rest of their school year.
We still don’t know whether schools will reopen before the summer, although given the First Minister’s comments it looks unlikely.
For all young people approaching transition from school, this news will be devastating – but particularly so for young people with an additional support need, for whom their future is perhaps not quite so clear. Transitions planning might not have happened in school yet. Skills Development Scotland centres are closed with careers advisers working remotely. Colleges are closed with admissions unclear.
This is an uncertain and worrying period for young people who need specialist support and their parents, even without the impact of the Coronavirus.
That’s where we hope ENABLE Works can help.
ENABLE Works’ Stepping Up programme operates in schools across the country – supporting young people from S4 to S6 to develop skills, confidence and ambition for a career and then supporting them to achieve that.
98% of the young people on Stepping Up go into a positive destination. 30% of people go into paid employment, 10% go into a Modern Apprenticeship and the other 58% go onto vocationally focussed college and training.
The programme was recognised as best practice at the United Nations in Vienna in February, winning a Zero Project Award for Education. The only winner in the UK.
Right now, all ENABLE Works teams are working remotely – ensuring the people we support stay engaged, focussed and healthy – and that includes the Stepping Up teams.
So, whilst we will continue to work with the young people already on our Stepping Up programme – we want to do more at this time of crisis.
That’s why we are launching Stepping Up LIVE – offering individual support and guidance, remotely, to ALL young people with additional support needs in the senior phase of school ANYWHERE in Scotland.
If you contact email@example.com, we will organise individual sessions with young people available via Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp video or simply over the phone.
Initially, we will work with you to do some vocational profiling and get to understand your skills and ambitions – but then we will agree a series of support and skills training sessions for as long as is helpful to you in securing a positive transition from school.
We have a team of Stepping Up Employment Coordinators who all work in schools and are very experienced in supporting planning and advice for a positive transition – and their advice and guidance is now available to you now at the press of a button through Stepping Up LIVE.
We want to make sure that, in the face of the current crisis, young people with additional support needs are not facing transition from school alone.
