Cervical Screening Awareness Week 2021

June 10, 2021 Case Studies - Membership Heather Gilchrist

In early 2020, ENABLE Scotland was approached by Jo’s Trust (a cervical cancer awareness charity)  to see if we would be interested in helping them make some accessible, easy read information about cervical screening / smear tests for women who have a learning disability.

I was part of the group of five women from ACE who worked with Suzanne and Iona from Jo’s Trust, alongside Laura from a production company called Production Attic, to make a series of accessible videos. As a group, we decided on who we wanted to be in the videos, and what they should look like. We were also responsible for making sure they were clear and understandable, and any text was easy to read.

It felt empowering to be part of the group and to have our voices heard about how the videos should look. It felt amazing to part of a project that could help save lives.

I encourage everyone who is offered one, to get a smear test, and remember to say what adjustments you need. Don’t be afraid to ask for anything that would make you feel more comfortable.
