Breaking Barriers set for best year ever in 2022

2022 is getting off to a flying start as our Breaking Barriers programme welcomes a further cohort of young, ambitious and talented students as they begin their university and work experience journey.

Breaking Barriers is a ground-breaking partnership between ENABLE Scotland, the University of Strathclyde Business School, ScottishPower and STV. This innovative programme has been designed to enable young people who have a learning disability to access life-shaping experiences of university that is a rite of passage for so many, yet it is currently available to so few young people who have a learning disability.

Today (26 January 2022), Breaking Barriers will welcome a new class of students ready to take on the challenge and excitement of university life, as they work towards graduating from the flagship programme with an Accreditation in Applied Business Skills from the University of Strathclyde.

Theresa Shearer, ENABLE Group CEO and co-founder of the Breaking Barriers programme, said:

I am proud that we continue to make it possible for students who have a learning disability to obtain a university qualification by attending a world-class business school, and to gain real work experience with some of Scotland’s highest profile corporate employers.

I look forward to following the journey of our latest students as they grow through the programme.

Such is the success of the programme, that many former graduates have gone on to shape their chosen career path and secure employment and additional training opportunities in fields such as filmmaking, para-medicine, cyber security, financial services, digital music, and fashion.

We would like to wish all of this year’s students the best of luck during their studies and work experience. This is the start of a very exciting and rewarding journey indeed.
