Breaking Barriers in Madrid

Our 2018/19 cohort of Breaking Barriers students’ had an amazing few days at Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid.

This international learning opportunity has given the students the chance to engage and access new experiences and cultures, alongside meeting other young people from another country, comparing experiences and working collaboratively. They also had a lot of fun!

Our Group CEO, Theresa Shearer, was honoured to address the university’s DEMOS project students at their graduation ceremony.

The DEMOS project has been running for six years, providing training for educational and technological roles at university level for young people in Spain who have a learning disability. The project has very much inspired how we operate Breaking Barriers.

Reflecting on our time in Spain, it is clear that the success of DEMOS and Breaking Barriers shows that there is a desire to collaborate across borders for inclusive education. We are two organisations in countries miles apart, and yet our vision is the same – proving that the education system must change.

Together we will continue to break down barriers and build an equal society for every person who has a learning disability.
