My Experience on Breaking Barriers
If I had to describe my experience on Breaking Barriers in 3 words, they would be inspiring, empowering and life-changing.
Like a lot of young people with an additional support need, I never thought I would ever get a chance to go to university, but being on Breaking Barriers meant I got the chance to be in an inclusive and supportive community of people while I was studying.
I got to meet new people and try new things which would not have been possible without this unique programme and the support of the ENABLE Family.
I learned things that I never knew before about business, marketing, digital communications, customer service – and about myself – and the support was tailored to make sure I achieved the best I could. Through each stage of the programme, I had a point of contact – whether it was Emma from ENABLE Works, Sarah my student mentor, or Marise from ScottishPower. It made me feel at ease every step of the way so I could fully engage with the course and achieve my potential.
Applying to Breaking Barriers was the best decision that I ever made. Applications for the Class of 2022 are open now, and I fully encourage any young person who thought, like me, that university wouldn’t be an option for them to jump at this opportunity!
If you are interested in applying, or would just like more information, please drop Amy Cairney from ENABLE Works an email at email@example.com. To be eligible for Breaking Barriers, you need to be a young person aged 16-25 and have an additional support need or mental health condition.
Once you have made contact, the team send you an expression of interest form, which is just a few questions about why you are interested in the programme and how you think it will benefit you. It’s really straight-forward to complete!
After that, there will be an interview where you get to meet Amy and either a member of staff from the University of Strathclyde, or someone from one of our industry partners. They will have a very informal chat with you about why you want to join Breaking Barriers and what’s involved in the course.
The Breaking Barriers course taught me invaluable skills which have given me the confidence to take on new challenges within my Membership Ambassador role at ENABLE. I feel more confident about engaging with external partners and promoting the work the charity is doing. The experience has helped me to work well with the rest of my team, and I also feel I am using the skills I’ve learned to support other people with learning disabilities to get involved with our membership.
Breaking Barriers could change your life, just like it’s changed mine. So go for it, and contact Amy to apply! firstname.lastname@example.org
