No Matter What – Orkney

Every Thursday throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, the country is joining together to #ClapForCarers.

We are so proud of the ENABLE Scotland Personal Assistants (PAs) who are doing an outstanding job on the frontline of the national response to this unprecedented challenge.

PAs like Sophie Paterson from our Orkney Services are keyworkers supporting and caring for some of our most vulnerable citizens, and – crucially – ensuring they are safe and well at home and do not need to access hospital services at a time when the NHS is under such pressure.

Sophie recently joined ENABLE Scotland and this is her first job in social care supporting people who have learning disabilities. Despite the current challenging times, Sophie has no regrets about starting a career in social care – in fact quite the opposite. This week, she told us about how much she enjoys her job:

I really enjoy my role and what makes it so special is the people we support – it is a really good feeling when you connect with them and really build up that personal supportive relationship. This has been an unsettling time for everyone but particularly people we support. We are all working hard to give that bit extra even if it is something simple like getting a takeaway for someone to make things a bit special when they can’t go out and do all the activities they enjoy.

As a single mum of three, the lockdown restrictions have been challenging but Sophie feels well supported in her role at ENABLE Scotland; she also told us about the amazing community response on Orkney:

The community across the Islands have been amazing; the shops are all doing deliveries and everyone is helping one another. It feels good that as ENABLE Scotland we are part of that.

When asked what she would say to other people considering a career in social care Sophie said:

Go for it! I always felt I had something to offer in this sector and I am so glad that I went for the role. It is challenging and rewarding; and I would encourage anyone thinking about it to get more information and apply.

PAs from ENABLE Scotland are providing support everyday in communities the length and breadth of Scotland during this crisis – all committed to being there for the person they support; no matter what.
