Together we will #BetheChange

May 16, 2018 Blog - ENABLE Scotland Heather Gilchrist

My name is Heather Gilchrist and I am an ENABLE Scotland Change Champion.

In Learning Disability Week, I want to share with you some of the work I have been doing with my fellow Change Champions as part of ENABLE Scotland’s #BetheChange campaign.

#BetheChange is funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and it gives people who have a learning disability – our Change Champions – a platform to share their personal stories and raise awareness of unacceptable behaviour and practices.

#BetheChange is all about challenging bullying of people who have learning disabilities and making change through understanding.

I know how it feels to be bullied – I was bullied at work and it really knocked my confidence. It has taken me a long time to build myself back up again.

According to research by ENABLE Scotland, two thirds of people who have a learning disability have been bullied.

This is unacceptable.

We know that bullying is often the result of prejudice.

People don’t always take the time to get to know people who have a learning disability and see all the good and positive things in our lives.

Change Champions are working to change this and we want to show everyone that our learning disabilities don’t define us.

We have made a film and we want to share it with you this Learning Disability Week.

Please watch ‘Get to Know Us’ today.

I really hope our film lets you see that we are all different but we deserve the same thing – respect.

I also hope that you will take the time to get involved with #BetheChange this Learning Disability Week.

We’ve been hosting ‘Get to Know Us’ events across Scotland this month, and there’s still a chance to join us for one. You can see all the details and sign up to attend an event here.

Please share our film with your colleagues and friends:

And please sign our pledge today and take action to #BetheChange in your community.

Thank you for taking the time to watch our film.

Together we will #BetheChange.

Heather Gilchrist is a member of Bearsden ACE, an ENABLE Scotland Change Champion and a Disability Agenda Scotland Ambassador
