The University of Strathclyde’s Barony Hall was filled with pride, joy and celebration as we honoured the latest cohort of Breaking Barriers graduates.

Since its launch in 2018, Breaking Barriers has been redefining what is possible for young disabled people. Co-founded by Enable, the University of Strathclyde and Scottish Power, the programme is built on a simple yet powerful principle: young disabled people should have equal access to education, careers and a true sense of belonging.

Through a unique combination of academic study, industry placements and personalised support, Breaking Barriers equips students with the knowledge, confidence and experience they need to thrive both during their studies and beyond.

This year’s graduates completed their studies within the University’s Faculty of Science, while also undertaking placements with Balfour Beatty. These placements provided invaluable real-world experience, helping students build practical skills and prepare for the next stage of their careers.

The impact of the programme goes far beyond academic achievement. It is reflected in the personal growth and transformation of each student.

One parent shared: “Since joining Breaking Barriers, he has grown in confidence and independence and, most importantly, he is happy. His passion for science has been reignited, he has been accepted into college and we can’t thank Enable enough for the support that has helped him thrive.”

It is not only widening access to higher education but also contributing to the development of a more inclusive workforce, one that reflects the full range of talent across our communities.

At Enable, we believe in an equal society where everyone has the right to live, work and participate in the communities of their choice, in line with the United Nations . Breaking Barriers brings these principles to life by supporting the rights set out in  (Education) and  (Work & Employment).

We were also delighted to welcome Professor Andrea Nolan CBE, Vice Chair, who joined us in celebrating this important milestone. Her continued support for Breaking Barriers and Enable’s mission is greatly valued. As we reflect on this year’s achievements, we are filled with pride, not only in what these graduates have accomplished, but in the journeys that lie ahead.

Congratulations to every one of our Breaking Barriers graduates.
