Supporters of Enable took to the streets of Edinburgh last weekend to join more than 35,000 runners at the annual Edinburgh Marathon.
Dave Muirhead, Ryan Butcher, Elliot Craft and Beth Rintoul were among those running in support of Enable. We were proud to be represented by these athletes and cannot thank them enough for their support.
Dave Muirhead completed the half marathon for Enable. This is one of six challenges the Muirhead family are taking on to raise funds for the charity.
Another runner was supporter Elliot Craft, a volunteer with Best Buddies Society in Edinburgh, which operates in partnership with Enable. He said on his JustGiving page: "It has been one of my best experiences at university. The friendships I've built and the fun I've had through this experience are why I want to give back so that Enable can continue to carry out its valuable work."
Fellow volunteer Beth Rintoul, who also ran the half marathon, said: "Through volunteering with Enable, I have seen first-hand the powerful impact of its work with children and adults who have learning disabilities. This charity creates an inclusive space where members feel supported and able to have fun."
Around 175,000 people in Scotland have a learning disability, yet fewer than 25,000 receive formal support through their local authority. Through our work, Enable delivers specialist information, advice and advocacy, community-based support, and human rights-inspired, member-led campaigns for change, helping to bridge this gap.
Ryan, who works for Royal Mail, will receive matched funding from his employer, adding to his fundraising efforts.
Thanks to the commitment of our supporters, whether running the Edinburgh Marathon, taking part in Tough Mudder or the Kiltwalk, or fundraising in many other ways, and the generosity of those who donate, Enable can continue this vital work.
This year, Enable is focused on making sport and culture truly inclusive and accessible for all, in line with Article 30 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
Congratulations to all the runners and their supporters for helping Enable work towards an equal society where everyone has the right to live, work and participate in the communities of their choice.
The momentum continues with Tough Mudder on 6 June and the next Kiltwalk, taking place in Aberdeen on 7 June. Those interested in taking part can find further information and sign up for future events through The Kiltwalk website, including opportunities for 2026.
