Every year, around 90 to 100 Enable colleagues take an important step in their careers by completing a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ). For many, it is much more than a qualification - it is a chance to build confidence, gain recognition for the skills they already use every day and open the door to new opportunities.
Through Enable's SVQ Centre, frontline colleagues can achieve nationally recognised qualifications tailored to their role. Personal Assistants complete the SVQ Level 2 in Social Services and Healthcare (SCQF Level 6), Team Facilitators undertake the SVQ Level 3 alongside the PDA in Health and Social Care Supervision (SCQF Level 7), while Service Managers complete the SVQ Level 4 with the Care Services Leadership and Management qualification (SCQF Level 10). These qualifications support Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration while helping colleagues continue to develop professionally.
Behind the programme is a team of five experienced partners and coordinators who support candidates across all regions of the organisation. With decades of combined experience, they pride themselves on building genuine relationships with every learner and tailoring support to their individual needs.
Many candidates begin the programme feeling apprehensive, particularly if they have not enjoyed traditional education or have been away from learning for several years. By breaking assessments into manageable steps and focusing on the skills colleagues already use every day, the team helps candidates build confidence throughout their qualification.
Lead SVQ Coordinator and Verifier Linda Casey says seeing that transformation is the most rewarding part of the job.
"People often begin the programme feeling overwhelmed or unsure if they can achieve the qualification. Seeing that grow into confidence and pride is why we do what we do. Some people arrive believing education isn't for them and then go on to achieve something they never thought possible."
Kylie Hainey, Service Manager East Ayrshire Services, is currently completing a Level 4 award. She said: "I was extremely nervous at the start as I felt more practical than academic. However my assessor has used various assessment methods to support me including weekly office check-ins, which makes me feel more confident to progress to completion."
The impact of the programme often extends beyond the qualification itself. Many Personal Assistants and Team Facilitators have progressed into more senior roles within Enable, using the knowledge, practical skills and confidence gained through their SVQs to take the next step in their careers.
The programme has also continued to evolve. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the team embraced digital assessment methods and has since adopted a hybrid approach, combining face-to-face and online support to give candidates greater flexibility.
Maintaining the high standards of the SVQ Centre is a year-round commitment. External verifiers regularly review policies, assessment decisions, evidence, resources and learner support to ensure the Centre continues to meet national quality standards.
Looking ahead, the team is already preparing for significant changes to SVQ qualifications due to be introduced in 2026. Standardisation meetings are underway, and Linda has played an active role in the national working group helping to shape the new assessment process.
"We've always embraced change because it helps us improve. Our priority is making sure every candidate receives the best possible support, and we're excited to continue growing the programme and helping even more colleagues succeed."
As the qualifications evolve, the team's mission remains the same: to remove barriers to learning, recognise the talent already within Enable's workforce and give colleagues the confidence to build rewarding careers supporting people to live the lives they choose.
