Apprenticeships give young people the opportunity to earn, learn, and build real skills. Enable Works recognises the importance of working with employers to give people opportunities into well paid, sustainable careers.
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re sharing Tom’s story.
Tom (name changed) for privacy was working on a zero‑hour contract and was preparing to become a dad for the first time.
Tom has a learning disability and having left school early, Tom was unsure how to move into meaningful, long-term work or learn new skills.
What he wanted was to support himself and his growing family.
That’s when Enable Works’ All in Aberdeen team stepped in.
An Employment Co‑ordinator worked with Tom to explore Modern Apprenticeship opportunities. After continued effort, a local bakery offered Tom an interview for an apprenticeship.
Tom was supported to prepare for the interview through mock interviews, helping to build his confidence and skills.
Tom was successful and secured an apprenticeship as a baker. He is now training in a skilled trade that will benefit him for life.
Tom said: “It’s not just about getting an apprenticeship and earning money. The help and support I received has allowed me to provide for my new family.”
The Enable Works team also helped Tom access a bike. This removed a travel barrier and made it easier for him to get to work.
Tom’s story shows how with the right support, inclusive employers and apprenticeships can open doors and unlock potential.
Enable Works’ All In Programme provides person-centred, specialist support for people who have a disability or long-term health condition. The aim of the programme is to support people to find sustainable and fulfilling work. It improves employability services and helps employers create workplaces where individuals can thrive.
