Enable Works is shining a spotlight on the people behind the progress. One of those people is Alan, who turned a challenging period of unemployment into a thriving business with support from Enable Works.
Alan, an experienced Fire Safety Officer based in Perthshire, faced personal and mental health challenges that led him to leave his role in October 2024. During this difficult time, he was referred to Enable Works by his local Community Mental Health Team.
Working closely with IPS Coordinator Brogan, and Business Gateway, Alan was supported in applying for a Skills Passport Grant. This grant, provided by Perth and Kinross Council, helps individuals access vocational training support to help them to move closer towards their employment goals. Brogan supported Alan to explore suitable training courses that aligned with his career goals and, completed activities with Alan to increase his confidence and employability skills to ensure he was ready for going back into the workplace.
Alan successfully secured £2000 funding, which he used to complete specialist Fire Risk Assessment Training in Sussex. This training allowed him to gain the certification and confidence to take the next big step. He launched his own business, Fire Arm Fire Protection Ltd.
Alan’s new company has already secured high profile contracts across Scotland, including the Scottish Game Fair and the Kelpies Live Concert. He has also received practical training in running a business, including invoicing, marketing, and securing business insurance. As part of Enable Works’ Individual Placement and Support model, Alan will continue to receive tailored support as he builds his business, helping him navigate challenges and work through whatever life brings.
“Starting my own business has given me purpose again. Enable Works did not just help me with funding. They believed in me when I did not believe in myself,” said Alan.
Enable Works Director Ashley Ryan said: “Alan’s journey to building his own business is a testament to both his dedication and the work of our IPS team. Enable Works aims to support and empower people and businesses. Helping people achieve their ambitions is at the heart of what we do. Inclusive support benefits people, businesses, and entire communities.”
Alan’s journey shows what is possible when support focuses on people’s strengths and ambitions, not just their challenges.
